How to Become a Successful Real Estate Agent: 4 Things You Need To Do As a Real Estate Agent to Create Your Dream Lifestyle

Most real estate agents are so focused on their business that they forget to live.

They sacrifice their time with family and friends and end up working all the time. This doesn’t have to be the case! You can and should create a dream lifestyle for yourself as a real estate agent

As a real estate agent, it is important to create a lifestyle that you are proud of and actually enjoy living. You don’t want your business to consume your life and prevent you from enjoying the things that matter most to you.

After all, real estate is simply a vehicle that you are using to provide you with the lifestyle that you really want so that you can finally:

-Take that trip

-Volunteer to coach your kids’ soccer games

-Donate to that charity

-Live in that dream home with your loved ones

-Buy that gift for your spouse

-Get that new car

-Create the lifestyle that you truly want

-Etc.

In order to actually be successful as an agent, it is crucial that you focus on your objectives and intentions not just for your business, but also your life.

Here are some tips on how to create your dream lifestyle as a real estate agent!

Life Not Business

As a real estate agent, your goal is probably to sell “X” number of houses or to make a “Y” amount of money in commissions.

That is your first mistake.

Your goal is not to make a certain amount of money or sell a certain number of homes. Your real goal is what those things can provide you with.

Read that again.

As harsh as it sounds, real estate agents don’t become real estate agents to sell houses. If you don’t think that’s true, think back to the last time you sold a listing where the listing agent offered the buyer’s agent 0% commission. You probably made your buyers pay you 3% of the sales price for your services.

As much as you don’t want to admit it, you won’t spend your days selling houses if you weren’t paid for it.

So why did you become a real estate agent? Was it for the money?

No. Money is just paper.

Then what is it? What is real estate to you?

Real Estate is a vehicle that is going to get you from where you are in life to where you want to go.

You sell real estate because you want something in life that you don’t currently have.

Separate Your Life from Your Business: What is the Purpose of Real Estate for You?

What most real estate agents need to understand is that in order to be a “successful real estate agent”, they first need to define for themselves what success is and what purpose real estate serves in their life.

Before you can even begin to learn how to become a successful real estate agent, you need to understand that real estate is not the most important thing in your life.

Your life is the most important thing in your life.

So ask yourself again, what purpose is real estate serving in your life? What is your dream real estate agent lifestyle?

As we mentioned previously, real estate, commissions, and money are vehicles. They are vehicles that you are simply using to:

-fund your dream vacation

-give you the freedom to coach your kids’ sports teams

-allow you to purchase that house or car

-give you the freedom to wake up everyday and choose what you get to do with your time

-etc.

Success is Not Objective

Understand that success is not objective.

There is no one or few defining traits to “success”. The only way to measure success is by looking at what a person wants and the degree to which they have acquired their wants.

And also know that there is no one else in the world that can measure your success other than your own seld.

So before you continue on your journey of learning how to be a successful real estate agent ask yourself this question and be absolutely clear on your answer:

What do you actually want?

Be Crystal Clear on What You Want in Life and What You Want to Achieve Through Real Estate.

How to Become a Successful Real Estate Agent: 4 Things You Need To Do As a Real Estate Agent to Create Your Dream Lifestyle

Real estate agents need to be clear on what they want in life.

What is it that you really want in your life that you are trying to achieve through your real estate business?

Is it freedom? Money? Time?

The reason will be vastly different for everyone, but the principle remains the same, you need to have a clear objective of exactly what you want to achieve in your life through real estate and have a clear mental image of you achieving that objective.

Set Your Goals and Intentions

The very first step to actually creating your dream lifestyle as a real estate agent is to set goals and intentions for your lifestyle.

What does your dream life look like to you?

Be very clear on exactly what that image is of you accomplishing your goals. You need to actually be able to see yourself already accomplishing those objectives and living the way you want to live in order to imprint that vision and thought into your subconscious mind.

Your Subconscious Mind

How to Become a Successful Real Estate Agent: 4 Things You Need To Do As a Real Estate Agent to Create Your Dream Lifestyle

What most people in the real estate industry talk about is taking action.

What no one talks about is what leads to action.

All of our actions, either in our lives, relationships, or as real estate agents in our business are controlled by the paradigms or thought patterns that are in our subconscious mind.

You see, our subconscious mind can not control what information to accept or reject, it simply takes information that we either accept from our senses or originate from our thoughts and stores it to then create the driving force behind our actions.

This means that if our subconscious mind is focused on achieving a certain goal, it will prompt us to take the actions necessary to achieve that goal without us even having to think about it.

This is called habit.

The problem is that most people have never been taught how to control their subconscious mind and as a result, they live their lives on autopilot controlled by outside forces such as society, family, friends, the media, etc.

The first step to creating your dream lifestyle as a real estate agent is to learn how to control and change the paradigms in your subconscious mind so that it is congruent with the life you want to live.

You can do this through things like repeated visualization of the life you want to live, the real estate agent you want to become, and the things that you want to have.

Start Acting as if You Are Already Living Your Dream Lifestyle.

The final step is to start living your life as if you are already living the dream lifestyle that you want.

Acting in a way that is congruent with the life that you want will help imprint that vision into your subconscious mind and eventually turn it into a reality that will manifest in physical form.

Remember that your subconscious has no filter, it is always watching.

Watching your thoughts and your actions.

This means that every time you take or fail to take an action that is incongruent with your vision, you are creating confusion and not upholding the integrity you need to manifest the vision into reality.

Remember, the only thing standing in between you and your dream lifestyle is YOU!

Gaining back Control of Your Business By Creating Congruency and Integrity

As we briefly touched on in an earlier paragraph, creating congruency through integrity is the most important thing you can do to actually live the lifestyle you dream of as a real estate agent.

Congruency is extremely important because like we said, your subconscious mind does not have the ability to choose what information to accept or reject.

The best way to uphold your integrity is by keeping the promises that you have made to yourself.

Keeping Your Promises and Control Your Business

We often hear about how important it is to keep our promises to others, but we never hear about the importance of keeping the promises we make to ourselves.

As a real estate agent, you are probably constantly keeping up with the promises that you have made to your clients, vendors, brokers, colleagues, friends, family, or anyone else that is demanding your time.

Although it is vitally important to keep any promises we made to other people, especially for real estate agents who are working with clients, it is even more important for you to keep the promises you made to yourself if you want to live the dream lifestyle you want as a real estate agent.

A big struggle for most real estate agents is that they are constantly being controlled by their clients or active deals. It is the nature of the business. Real estate transactions have multiple moving parts and the clients you are serving are making probably one of the most important decisions in their life.

It is no secret that most real estate agents leave their phones open 24/7, picking up every call, responding to every text, and catering to everyone’s needs but their own.

When asked, most real estate agents will say that they do this because they are trying to get more business and close more deals so that they can make the money that they need to fund their dreams. Although that argument sounds logical, it is completely counterintuitive if you are actually trying to create your own lifestyle.

You see one of the most important points we had just mentioned was the power of our subconscious mind and why we need to live and act as though we have already accomplished our goals.

As a real estate agent, if you are constantly desperately chasing the next deal, you are telling yourself that you are not in control of your business and that you need the next client in order to survive, instead of running your business intentionally so that you can thrive.

You are the only authority of your time. Not your clients, not your family, not your broker, not your partners. You are the only person who has ownership over yourself and are the only person responsible for your dreams.

Use your time as if you are already the successful agent that want to be. Set boundaries, take ownership of your goals, and only work with clients that are in alignment with your intentions and your vision.

If you set a goal and made a promise to yourself to make $100k this year as a real estate agent, then it is probably not the best idea for you to desperately chase and nurture a lease client.

You are in control of your business. Keep the promise you made about your business to yourself. Fire that client. Take back control of your life so that you can hit your goals and build your dreams.

Time and Money Freedom: The Only Way to Building Your Dreams

Now that you know that success is defined by what you want, you are probably thinking about the money you would like to make as a real estate agent so that you can get to the things you wish to have in life.

But understand that money, although important, is not the only thing in the world that will get you the life you wish to live.

Think of this for a second.

Would you rather make $1million a year as a real estate agent but only 2-weeks out of the year to spend it or $100k a year and all 365 days to spend it?

A lot of people in this world have time but no money. And a lot of people have a lot of money but no time. Very few have both time and money.

The Decision Triangle

When most people make decisions they think only in terms of money. And like we mentioned earlier, although money is important, it is not the only thing that is of value in your life.

The quality of a person’s life is determined by 3 things:

-Money

-Time

-Physical/Emotional Health

This is called the decision triangle.

Most real estate agents make business decisions only in terms of money. How much money are they making? How much are they losing? How much more can I make?

What most real estate agents neglect is the other 2 points on the decision triangle. Their time and stress levels.

This can be detrimental to agents who want to build their dream lifestyles through real estate and has trapped many realtors into a self-inflicted rat race.

2 Realtors Makes $10k in Commission: Which one would you rather be?

Think about this scenario for a moment.

There are 2 real estate agents who each made $10,000 in commission income from a listing that they closed. Agent 1 and agent 2. Which one would you rather be?

On the surface, this seems like a nonsense question. They both made the same amount of money so what difference does it make?

The difference is in the amount of time they spent on each transaction and the stress they had.

Agent 1 worked with a client whose property was located 45 minutes away from their home in an area that needed the agent to drive across the busiest freeway in the entire city. The clients were also very needy and argued about every detail of the listing. Because of this amongst other factors, the transaction took the agent over 4 months to close.

Agent 2 worked with their ideal client whose property was right next door to their house. The client was their good-natured neighbor and good friend who trusted the agent and their expertise. Because of this and the sellability of the property, the agent was able to list and close on the property in under 2 weeks.

Now think about your answer again. Which one of these agents would you rather be?

Although agent 1 made the same amount of money as agent 2, they were forced to deal with situations that causes enormous amounts of stress such as driving in traffic, arguing with clients, and working in a bad environment. Not to mention the amount of time that it took the agent, which could have been used to reinvest into their business to create more money.

Even if agent 1 made more money on that deal, I think it is safe to assume that most of you reading would still rather choose to be agent 2.
